Dr. Joseph’s interdisciplinary background lies at the interface of engineering, women’s health, neuroscience, and translational medicine. She has expertise in (1) isolation and characterization of bacterial extracellular vesicles and of associated host responses (epithelial and immune); (2) evaluation of mouse models of pregnancy and rat models of neonatal brain injury, including live animal imaging, live tissue imaging, and complex immunofluorescent staining and imaging; (3) evaluating uptake, distribution, and transport of nanoparticles in live animal, tissue, and cell culture models of health and disease; and (4) developing nanoparticles that are capable of focally targeting disease tissue and specific cells, while providing sustained action of a therapeutic agent.
Dr. Joseph joined Syracuse University in January 2025 as an Assistant Professor in Biomedical and Chemical Engineering. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Washington in Chemical Engineering under the advisement of Dr. Elizabeth Nance, and Bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in Biomolecular & Chemical Engineering. At JHU, she participated in undergraduate research in the lab of Dr. Justin Hanes. Prior to starting her faculty position, she completed a postdoc with Dr. Michal Elovitz in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
